Further holiday insurance options

By: Mathew Loap

There are many reasons that a planned trip may have to be cancelled or delayed. Many travellers find that, to their surprise, the travel insurance that they purchased for the trip does not cover holiday cancellations and curtailments. For this reason, it is wise to check over a travel insurance policy with a fine toothcomb, and to then take out further cancellation cover should you need it.

Taking out insurance against these eventualities may be wise as you could gain compensation for a trip that had to be missed or cut short. But anyone choosing this type of cover, sometimes called ‘trip protection’ insurance, should make sure that they know exactly which reasons for cancellation and delay they are covered for.

Holiday delays

Cancellation and curtailment insurers offer differing amounts of compensation depending on the reason given for curtailment. Below are the most likely causes for a trip to be curtailed – you should check your policy detail beforehand to see which if these you are covered against – hopefully all of them!

Natural disasters - unexpected need for quarantine - lost, stolen or damaged money - unannounced strikes at airports, en route, or in your destination country - hijacking - bad weather - lost, stolen or damaged travel documents - delay caused by a bad traffic accident en route.

You may wish to choose an insurance policies that offers some extra cover that will provide for extra accommodation or food costs in the event of a holiday delay, as not all insurers cover these costs as standard.

Trip cancellation

The number of possible causes for holiday cancellation is vast. Many of these causes will be covered as standard by cancellation insurance policies, others will not. Covered reasons for cancellation may include:

Accident en route - being selected for jury duty - hijacking - illness - flood or fire at home - natural disasters - injury to one of the travel party.

Watch out for the following causes as they are not typically covered by insurers:

Self-inflicted injuries or illness – change in plans - change in your financial situation leaving you unable to afford your holiday - contractual obligations - injury or sickness contracted through the use of illegal substances.
