One person’s holiday idyll can be another traveller’s idea of stifling boredom – the path less-explored being a far more enticing holiday prospect. However, choosing an unusual destination for your travels can pose real problems when it comes to finding travel insurance. There are regions on this earth that insurers simply will not cover in any way shape or form. Four such regions have lately been identified by popular UK travel insurers Direct Travel, and travellers will be hard pressed to insure themselves for a trip to an of them for the foreseeable future. Countries falling into this uninsurable zone are Sudan, Cuba, Afghanistan, Liberia. The inclusion of Cuba in this list is particularly puzzling to the UK’s foreign office, who report that many thousands of Britons happily visit Cuba for holidays each year – and return home safe and sound. In addition, the current crime rate on this Caribbean island is remarkably low, while its healthcare standards remain high. It will be apparent to anyone who pays attention to current affairs that Liberia, Afghanistan and Sudan are indeed highly risky holiday destinations! But many people visit Cuba each year, and this begs the question – is Cuba really as dangerous as the infamous Helmand province? The answer lies with Direct Travel. Direct Travel was recently bought over by AIG – it’s important to note that AIG are an American company. American-Cuban relations are still as fraught as ever, with American citizens still effectively banned from visiting Cuba. For this reason, AIG may well be seeking to extend this anti-Cuban US policy to its business in the UK. In the current financial climate, holiday travel is down, so any travel insurance revenue is vital - and so some see Direct Travel’s stance as a costly mistake. For UK holidaymakers looking to take a break on this exotic island, this means that Direct Travel are a no-go if you’re looking to travel with insurance. But besides Direct Travel, you’ll be pleased to hear that many other UK insurance companies offer travel cover to Cuba – and at a reasonable cost too.
