Installing Your Own GPS Vehicle Tracking System

By: Michael Todd

Hiring a company to install a GPS tracking system in your vehicle can cost thousands of dollars. People that learn how to do it themselves can save big money, or make money by doing it for others.
If you take the time to learn correctly, you can learn how to do the full install in less than thirty minutes. This helps a lot because you often won't have a lot of access time to the vehicle.
Getting power the the GPS tracking system is usually the most difficult part. You can usually use the car's battery. However, if you're installing the system without the driver's knowledge, you may want to install a dedicated battery.
Once you have power to the unit, it will act kind of like a cell phone. Most units have a SIM card that's used to connect to a mobile or satellite network. You will need to put the SIM into the device and then power it up.
With the power on and the SIM installed, you are ready to go. Now all you need to do is figure out how to mount the device. If you need to hide it, you should go under one of the back seats or under the carriage.
Most GPS tracking systems for vehicles will alert you via text message. That's right, the device will text your phone and let you know where the car is. Since each system is quite different, you will need to check your specific device out to see if this is possible in your case.
Installing the tracking device's software on your computer is usually very easy. It's normally as simple as inserting a CD, and then following a few on screen steps. This should take about five minutes and then you're all set.
