Lowering Triglycerides The Easy Way

By: Fred Jackson

As people strive to become more heart and health conscious, they are actively looking at indicators such as weight, blood pressure and cholesterol levels when determining their risk for heart disease and stroke. Even though your weight, blood pressure and cholesterol numbers are in a normal range, elevated triglycerides can be another health risk factor to consider. People will increase their effort in lowering triglycerides when they realize what triglycerides are, what the measurement numbers mean, and what tools and techniques are available for lowering triglycerides.

It's important to know the ranges of triglyceride levels and what threat they pose to a persons health. The simplest explanation is that triglycerides are fat, as it is the form that fat takes in the human body, as well as most foods. The fat cells and blood stream of the human body both contain triglycerides.
There is a link between high levels of triglycerides, coronary artery disease and some forms of diabetes. Detection of the condition is a powerful diagnostic and preventative tool. For most people, the American Heart Association considers a triglyceride level of less than 150 as normal. Borderline-high is defines levels of 150-199; 200 to 499 is considered high, and 500 and higher is very high. Hypertriglyceridemia, the medical term for high triglycerides levels is effectively treated by diet, exercise and medication.
Medication is usually recommended by most doctors only after diet and exercise have been unsuccessful in treating the condition. This is largely due to potential side effects of the medication, which can often be severe. Most of the dietary methods for reducing triglycerides are common sense. Reducing caloric intake for all types of food is a "must do" for the overweight. Drastic reductions of all trans and saturated fats and high cholesterol foods are in order for all patients. Consumption of fruits, vegetable and low and non-fat dairy products should be increased.
Alcohol can have a negative effect on triglyceride levels. High triglyceride patients need to severely reduce alcohol consumption in conjunction with the other common sense dietary tips. Eating foods containing canola or olive oils, such as margarine can raise triglyceride levels, therefore butter and small amounts of foods with saturated fats should be used instead in moderation, because monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are far worse for triglyceride levels than saturated fats. Albacore tuna and mackerel contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and are far better than fatty meats like hamburger for controlling triglyceride levels.

It's vitally important for patients with high triglyceride levels to increase their level of exercising. This can be done best using aerobic exercises, such as running and jogging, or using an elliptical machine, in five 30 minute sessions per week. Instead of just watching TV in the evening, a busy person should consider getting an aerobic exercise machine and exercise while they watch.

An important step to ensuring good cardiovascular health is lowering triglycerides. To accomplish this, people need to improve their diet, by reducing intake of alcohol and certain kinds of fatty foods, and increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and certain fish. Proper exercise is also important, with five 30 minute sessions a week being considered ideal by most doctors. The advice present in this article could be very helpful in ensuring people are taking care of the health of their hearts.
