One of the most popular career choices being made these days is a move from corporate jobs to home based positions. With the enticing new freedom and the ability to save money on commuting, these jobs are quickly becoming the most popular option for working Americans. Of these home based jobs, medical transcription is typically sought after. Not only is medical transcription’s training a relatively quick process, but the beginning medical transcription salary is also appealing. It is very possible to earn a decent living and provide for your family as a medical transcriptionist without having to give up the freedoms of being your own boss. The medical transcriptionist salary is typically determined by many differing factors. First of all, your salary is determined by the amount of experience and training you have. If you have just completed your certification and are just starting out, you will typically be paid less than if you have many years of on the job experience. Although most MT’s are paid by line, the average salary for an entry level MT works out to be between $25K and $35K. This also averages out to a median earning of $14 per hour. If you have quite a few years of medical transcription experience, you can be paid a salary upwards of $65K or more for a full time position. Another factor in determining what your salary will be as an MT is editing costs. Although there is not set pay scale for hospitals, transcription companies or doctor’s clinics compared to working at home, you can be paid more or less depending on whether or not your work has to be inspected. Although this ties into experience, if you work from home when you are first starting out as an MT, the company you work for will usually have to send your work through a editor or proofreader to make sure that your work is at least 98% accurate according to HIPPA before they can submit it. The more they have to spend time sending your work through proofers, the less you will likely be paid. The good news is that the more experience you gain and the better you are at proofing your own work, the more your salary will increase. Other factors such as your typing speed and hours you are able to put into your work per day will affect your pay, but these are all variables which can be changed or improved upon. A final factor that changes with time is location. Currently three of the highest paying states on average for MT’s are New York, Texas and California. Don’t be discouraged if you do not live in one of these states though. It is very possible and likely that MT companies who are based out of these states will hire you to work remotely from home so you can take advantage of the great incentives they offer. As heath care needs are increasing all over the U.S. and as the needs for medical transcription are rising, the MT salary will continue to grow in other states as well. Even with the expansion of technology in this field, the need for an MT will never fully dissipate as there will always be a need for the human element. Medical transcription is one of the leading home based jobs on the market. With a competitive pay scale and freedoms few other careers can boast, it is no wonder that the desire to become an MT is growing as well.
