Who would win in a fight: Schwarzenegger or Stallone? It's the timeless question that has been the center of playground arguments and workplace disputes for decades. We'd like to help you decide once and for all who the supreme cinematic beefcake is. Arnold Schwarzenegger is arguably the most iconic action star of the 20th century, with starring roles in the classic films Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator and Predator. The Austrian bodybuilder and former Mr. Universe has since moved away from explosive blockbusters and into Californian politics. With his term as Governor coming to a close and a cameo in the upcoming film Terminator: Salvation, he's sure to be remembered as an action titan. The Italian Stallion, Sly Stallone, has positioned himself as one of the most charismatic action hero of his time. Famous for portraying movie legends Rocky and Rambo, Stallone has also become one of the most accomplished action directors currently working. It's hard to say whether Stallone could take down Schwarzenegger. The Governator's cinematic incarnations usually have a bevy of weaponry on his side, if not attached to his body in some way. However, Stallone's characters are street smart with expertise in booby traps. Perhaps it is neither Stallone nor Schwarzenegger that deserve the action hero crown. It's possible that one of the great unsung action stars could take them both on and win. Jean-Claude Van Damme was the biggest star in the world for a short period. However, not even the martial arts master could earn back respect after Street Fighter. Dolph Lundgren could have been a serious contender. That is, if he hadn't been defeated by Stallone in Rocky 4 and Van Damme in Universal Soldier. For a time it seemed that Steven Seagal would climb to the top. He now flounders in straight-to-DVD thrillers. Of course, the archetypal action hero has evolved over the past few decades. Ever since Bruce Willis got trapped barefoot in the Nakatomi Plaza, action films have featured smarter, more sensitive champions. Thespians such as Mark Wahlberg, Nicolas Cage, Will Smith and even Liam Neeson have emerged as legitimate action leads. Juggling Oscar nominations with explosive blockbusters has become old hat in this new cinematic era. While their brains may prove better than brawn, will they ever be recognized as definitive action stars like Stallone and Schwarzenegger? Stallone's next starring role will be in The Expendables, an action ensemble piece which he also wrote and will direct. Co-starring Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke, it looks as if it might be the ultimate film for action junkies. Most excitingly, Arnie himself is rumoured to have a small cameo in the film. Although it is unlikely to be the titanic showdown we had always dreamed of, it sounds like a pleasant acknowledgment of two giants in a field of greats.
