Europe once a reigning superpower of the world ruled the world for centuries; today it has lost its superpower status but it stays the most visited destination in the world, what is more , tourism is one of the most promising sectors on the European economy, indeed since 1980 the number of arrivals doubled in the European destinations. Being competitive in the tourism field is vital for any economy: Indeed tourism creates, maintains jobs, let me give and analyze an example: Let’s say a family goes for a vacation in France: they will buy tickets, book a hotel room if not more, they will go sightseeing, eat at restaurants, and buy souvenirs... Now with that example we can deduce the importance of tourism, I have enumerated no less than five economic sectors one family keeps at least four economic sectors active. Now if you consider that from a real life perspective, meaning that millions tourists visit Europe every year we can at least get the idea about the importance of tourism in a given economy. Thanks to tourism countries are ready to develop infrastructures and of course to make existing infrastructures more attractive. Making existing infrastructures more attractive can prove to be an effective strategy: If a tourist enjoyed himself in one particular destination and learns that this destination has improved it’s facilities he could return there . Now let’s get some numbers into the picture: The part of tourism in the gross domestic product is approximatively 11% the job creation rate in the tourism field is superior to the European average of job creation rate (on a global scale) One particularity of European tourism is the fact that tourism in Europe is essentially internal. One of the main objectives that plays in a destination’s competitivity is durability, and European institutions understood that principle quite well, indeed tourism occupies an important space in European politics and policies. Moreover we also have to take into account the fact that Europe is now facing tough competitions from other continents The European commission created the tourism unit which is in charge of the “tourism policy”. The European parliament voted few measures to make sure Europe stays competitive on the international front. Let me present some of them: A promotion program: The commission financed a promotion portal on the net , their budget was about two million Euros . This portal was targeting three main markets: - Usa - Canada - South America The European tourism commission is working on a dedicated entry for european citizens. The commission is also conducting studies like the impact of cultural and sportive events on non corporate companies in the tourism field. The “destination of excellence”: every country member of the EU (or candidate to join the EU) select one of it’s touristic assets to compete against others. The commission chooses a theme and any competing destination has to stick to the theme. Legal work: A law was voted concerning disabled people: air travel companies cannot refuse to take them because of their condition what is more they should make necessary arrangements to get disabled clients on the plane for example.
